Mortars and pestles have been around for thousands of years ¿ long before kitchens existed they were already a classic utensil ¿ they do the job of crushing, grinding and powdering herbs, grains, spices, nuts, roots, teas ¿ all kinds of healthy eats. This style of grinding releases flavor best in seeds, herbs, spices and garlic. Mortars and pestles are handy for crushing pills and supplements, too. This set of 3 mortars and pestles have contoured bottoms & pestle head to hold the grindables in place. Porcelain is easy to clean, dishwasher safe and won’t absorb food odors or stain.

Nothing to criticize. I didn’t use these very long but I certainly had no problems while I did.
5 Stars A 5 star but w/ codicils - EXCELLENT gift. Pill grinding too!
The codicil is that my medium pestle had flaws in the grinding edge (IMHO, bacteria niches. But with careful cleaning, maybe not?) and a flaw in the ceramic glazing on the upper part. I attacked the flaw on the grinding end (it’s porous & soft) with sandpaper. I have zero idea if that’s “pukka” but it makes sense to me (after all, what is a mortar & pestle othen than grinding & sanding?).
HOWEVER, for the price, it’s a wonderful set. It would make a great work exchange, house-warming, shower, small occasion or Xmas gift. I think if you removed it from the box and creatively packed it, it would look like a MUCH more expensive item (and if you wash it, the “Made in China” sticker will be removed from the bottom).
The smallest size is FANTASTIC for grinding pills (pets or people).
I *so* recommend this item that I just bought several for my “gift supply”. I’m going to open them to check quality (will do switcheroo if necessary…maybe I was unlucky?)

We got this nicely priced set for the smallest one to grind up our cat’s medicine. Works great!
5 Stars Three for the price of one
I’ll probably only use the smaller one, but for that alone the price is still right to me. I used it to grind home grown cayenne. Would be great in case you wanted to grind a pill into a powder. Like maybe aspirin or some such to put in juice for a baby or someone having difficulty swallowing pills.
